Grits and Gospel - April 21, 2012 at Pendleton Community Center

Tickets for Grits and Gospel are available for $8 each at Avenue of Oaks on the square in Pendleton.  This event will begin at 9:30 am at the Pendleton Community Center and will feature Gospel Music by Jacky Manley, Sandra Gantt and Sorelle along with a bowl of grits with your favorite topping and an assortment of pastries and fruit.  Come join the fun in Pendleton!

June 4 Historical Trail Tour at Woodburn 10 am $3 -  istorical Trail Tour, Saturday, June 4, at Woodburn. It starts at 10 AM. The trail is 1/4 mile and guests should wear sturdy hiking shoes. Price is $3. Some of the structures they will see include: the old Flint Rock Road, the 22,000 gallon cistern, the foundations for the horse barn, blacksmith shop, and the bunkhouse. June 5 - Kirking at P'ton Presby Church 11 a.m. -

PENDLETON PRESYERIAN CHURCH IS HAVING A KIRKING ON JUNE 5.  THE PUBLIC IS INVITED!

The word “kirking” means a “churching” or a blessing.” It comes from the Scottish Gaelic word “kirk,” which means church. The Kirking Ceremony dates to 1559 and the founding of Presbyterianism in Scotland.  The National Church of Scotland - the denomination’s mother church – celebrates an annual worship service when civic leaders, clan chieftains, various dignitaries, and church officers are blessed by the Kirk, or church, and re-dedicated to their positions of influence.   Religious and governmental leaders are blessed because, unlike in the United States, separation of church and state isn’t an issue in the British Isles.  Traditionally known as “Kirking of the Council,” the service begins with the ceremonial arrival of the clergy, the choir, honored guests and elected officials.  The word of God is read and preached. Hymns are sung.  Prayers are offered for those called to lead, and the Church blesses the society at large. The Reverend Dr. Peter Marshall, of Coatbridge, is the pastor most credited bringing the service to the U.S.  During World War II, he preached a sermon at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., called “Kirkin’ O’ The Tartan.”  From there, the service spread like wildfire across the nation, and today many Episcopal churches - a denomination rooted in England – also join in the beauty and pageantry of this Scottish celebration and re-dedication.

June 11 - Pancake Breakfast  -Camp Essence will host a ''Pancake Breakfast at Fatz Cafe"on June 11 from 7:30AM-10:30AM in Anderson.The Breakfast includes 3 pancakes,eggs,choice of meat and drink.The breakfast is $7,Camp Essence will receive $4 from each ticket sold.We hope to sale 200 tickets.This will be a great way to support these awesome young ladies.

Thank you Pendleton, Thank you Squidoo

Yesterday was spent trying to absorb all that has happened to me in the last couple of days. I have truly been overwhelmed and just had to share some of my thoughts.

The Town Council and Mayor Carol Burdette were so kind to recognize the Friends of the Park volunteers who worked very hard on our Freedom Fest this year. We were able to raise over $7,000 for Veterans Park. After the recognition at the Town Council Meeting on September 8, 2009, the Mayor asked for me to remain up front. She began reading a proclamation for this day to be "Nancy Hellams Queen of Squidoo Day in Pendleton". I could not believe what I was hearing! This was followed by adorning me with a fancy robe, scepter, crown, roses, and sash. The mayor led me to my throne where I sat in complete amazement while those in attendance stood and clapped for me.

When I got in my car to come home, I called my sister to tell her the fantastic news and she began immediately to make a lens about it called Pendleton Honors Squidoo And Ohme. The comments from all over the world from Squidoo friends and local friends were posted on this lens. It was so very kind of Joan to make this lens and to tell the world about what had happened. There was even a comment from the founder of Squidoo, Seth Godin.

Squidoo and Pendleton are my passions and the two great communities have only one thing in common and that is that both are filled with wonderful people. Squidoo has proven to be the perfect forum for promoting our little town and the town has embraced Squidoo. It always amazed me to look and see who has taken the time to read about what we have going on here. There have been times when I was concerned that Pendleton folks were getting tired of hearing about Squidoo and that Squidoo folks were getting tired of reading about Pendleton but both have continued to surprise me. My work on Squidoo is only successful because of the readers from Pendleton and from Squidoo lensmasters. I thank all of you!
