You're Invited To The 5th Birthday Celebration of Barrett's Place Playground

BARRETT’S PLACE PLAYGROUND’S 5TH BIRTHDAY/MAINTENANCE DAY
OCTOBER 30, 2010

It’s been five years since the Pendleton area came together to build Barrett’s Place Playground in memory of Barrett Beck and others in the community.   The unique playground was built in just 5 days by over 1500 volunteers with the $180,000 that was raised in 6 months.  In 2005, Pendleton Pride In Motion organized this amazing community effort and each year volunteers return to the playground to reflect on its purpose, celebrate its existence and do all the needed maintenance work.

October 30th will be the 5th Birthday of Barrett’s Place Playground and this birthday party will not resemble your traditional birthday celebrations.  There will be balloons, cake and a fun time, but that is about all that would make you think this is a birthday party.  Participants will come with their work gloves on and ready to spend the morning hauling and spreading new mulch, installing new pickets and pavers, adding new sand to the sandbox, sealing the wood and much, much more.  Ed Kirkley, one of the organizers of the event, says, “There is a job for everyone and lots to be done”.

The 5th Barrett’s Place Birthday/Maintenance Day is organized by Friends of the Park, a group of dedicated citizens interested in making Veterans Park the best it can be.  Friends of the Park invites everyone to join them on October 30 at 8:30 a.m. for a morning of chores and celebration at both Barrett’s Place Playground and Trotter’s Trail at Veterans Park.

The 2010 Volunteers of the Year for Friends of the Park will be announced during the morning of the Birthday Celebration.  Two volunteers will be recognized for their contributions to Veterans Park with a plaque and a personalized picket will be placed at the playground in their honor.

Personalized Pickets and Pavers are still available.  Contact Kim (287-7634) to place your order.

This year we will be planting 25 dogwood trees around Trotter’s Trail and will need help getting these in the ground.

For more information call Kim Beck 287-7634 or Ed Kirkley 646-6291.  Also, check out our website to read more about Barrett’s Place http://www.squidoo.com/barretts-place-playground

Woodburn Tour of New Discovery Aug 7

A recent discovery at Woodburn Historical House is shedding new light on how the former plantation's farm was operated. While working on clearing portions of the museum home's historical trail, the foundation and wall of the horse barn and the blacksmith's barn were discovered. For $3 per person, the building's remains will be available for public viewing. Guests wishing to see the house after the walking tour is complete may do so for an additional $4 per person. The 1/2 mile round trip is considered "easy" walking down, and "moderate" hiking up, so sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots are recommended. Those wishing to tour Woodburn Historical House without first taking the tour may do so for the regular rate of $6 per person, beginning at 11 AM. A special tour of Ashtabula will also be scheduled for 2 PM at the regular rate of$6 per person.
