April 9 - 19TH CENTURY MOURNING TRADITIONS AND CUSTOMS TOUR- Ashtabula 10 am - Call 646-7249
As part of their educational mission, the Pendleton Historic Foundation is offering a tour that highlights the traditions and customs of 19th century mourning. The tour will be held Saturday, April 9, at Ashtabula Museum Home. Starting at 10 AM, guests will enter the home every 30 minutes, with the last tour entering at 12 noon. Because space within each tour is limited, guests are encouraged to make an advanced reservation by calling 864-646-7249. Price for the tour, to be paid at the door, is $4 and the tour will last approximately 50 minutes. As some of the information is not suitable for children, this tour is designed for guests 16 and over.
Upon arrival at Ashtabula, guests will receive the funeral invitation for James T. Latta, Jr. James, the infant son of James and Angela Latta, died at Ashtabula in 1856. Docents dressed in the various stages of mourning will guide visitors through the first floor of the house. Subjects covered during the tour include the art of dying, mourning etiquette, invitations and visitation, draping the house, the stages and dress of mourning, the wake, funeral food, post mortem photography, and consolation literature.
Following the mourning tour, a regular tour of the house will be given. At 1 PM, anyone wishing to tour the entire house may do so for $6 per adult and $2 for ages 5-10. For further information or to make reservations for the mourning tour, call 646-7249 or visit www.pendletonhistoricfoundation.org.
Ashtabula is located on HWY. 88, 3 miles east of downtown Pendleton. Ashtabula and Woodburn (HWY.76) are both antebellum plantation homes and are owned and operated by the Pendleton Historic Foundation, a 501(C)(3) organization. The Foundation relies on private donations and grants, admission fees, and rentals to maintain the houses and run the educational programs. Both homes are open for guided tours, weddings, receptions, reunions, business meetings, etc. Volunteers are needed. Visit the Foundation website or call 646-7249 for more information.
