Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend - Alumni Softball Charity Event for Veterans Park

Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend – A PHS Alumni Charity Event to help make Pendleton’s Veterans Park Sparkle!
October 29, 2011 from 10 to 5
Sponsored by:  Friends of the Park

It's going to be a fun day at Veterans Park in Pendleton SC on October 29, 2011 from 10 am to 5 pm. A group of energetic, creative alumni of the Pendleton High School Lady Bulldogs Softball Teams have Stepped Up To The Plate with the “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend” fundraiser to raise money for the renovation of the ball fields at Veterans Park. Most of these women remember practicing on these fields when they played for Pendleton High School and they have fond memories of those days gone by. They want to do their part to make sure that future generations will be able to enjoy the park as much as they did.  They have joined with Friends of the Park who is sponsoring the event.  Posey says: “We want to see our Veterans Park sparkle and we hope our event will help do just that”.

Lady Bulldog Alumni have been gathering at Veterans Park for the past Sunday afternoons at 2 pm along with their former coach, Coach Ed Ables.  They may be little slower than they were back when they played for Pendleton High School but their Bulldog Spirit is as strong as ever. Ansley Allen, one of the Event Committee Members, reported that they hope to have enough players for 3 teams and will play games at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm at Veterans Park located at 500 Lebanon Rd. in Pendleton.   The very talented Bentley Andrews will open the day by singing the National Anthem.  Bentley is also one of the Lady Bulldog Alumni.   Zander Morris will be entertaining during the day with his great voice.

“Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend” will be more than softball games.  There will be Craft Vendors and Food. We have 10 Craft Vendors right now but Posey said that they are still taking applications and hope to have a few more.  Hevy Mann will be there selling his popular cuisine including his famous funnel cakes.

But wait!  There is more!  “Dunk Em For Diamonds!”  will be a hit as folks are already sending in their nominations for Dunkees.  Who would you like to see in the dunk tank?  Sponsor your boss, coach, co-worker, husband, wife, pastor or yourself and get dunked for 30 minutes.  These 30 minute Time Slots are available for a minimum of $20.00.  How much is your Dunkee worth?  There is a form to be filled out and a pledge that the dunkee has to sign so call today or copy the form off of the website or facebook fan page.  At the event, everyone will have the opportunity come Dunk Em For Diamonds.  Cost will be $2.00 per throw or 3 throws for $5.00.  So far, the following Dunkees have signed the pledge promising to climb into the tank while smiling, harass all Dunkers, and refrain from holding any grudges against any Dunkers for 30 minutes without complaining or whining about being cold and wet.
1:30 pm – Wade King
2:00 pm – Sherry Traynum
3:00 pm – Lindsey Lingefelt
3:30 pm – Danny Cobb

All the money from this event will go to Friends of the Park for the Step Up To The Plate Fundraising Campaign for the ball fields at Veterans Park. You can be an Event Sponsor for a minim of $100.   Step Up To The Plate Fundraising Campaign is a collaborative effort of Pendleton Recreation Association, Town of Pendleton and Friends of the Park.  If you are interested in donating to this great cause, please mail your tax deductible check to the address below and designate your donation for “Step Up To The Plate”:

Pendleton Farmers Market - Thursdays 4 to 6 and Saturdays 10 to 1

The Pendleton Farmers Market is held on the beautiful historic Village Green in Pendleton, South Carolina.  It is such a wonderful experience just to see the colorful array of fresh produce with a picturesque background of the Farmers Hall.  Many farmers, growers, crafters and gardeners come to the square to sell their wares.  Pendleton High School's FFA often comes to sell the products of their school garden.  It is so refreshing to see young people involved in this community event.

One of our locals said "You can smell the freshness at the Pendleton Farmers Market" so come to Pendleton SC and enjoy the experience!

Are you coming to Freedom Fest July 2nd at Veterans Park?

Freedom Fest is so much fun for the whole family so come on out and join the fun!  Bring your chair and come early to eat a great hamburger or get one of Hevy's Funnel Cakes and then play a game or two of Bingo.  The children will enjoy the Inflatables, games and activities.
One of the highlights of Freedom Fest is the Salute To Our Heroes which is organized by Friends of the Park Volunteer, Faye Ladd, who is also very active in the American Legion Post 113 Auxiliary.  Faye and her American Legion Friends have a display of photos and memorial from local Veterans.  Be sure to stop by her booth next to the stage to see all they have.  You will enjoy running into Uncle Sam who will be giving out Free American Flags (made in the USA).

STEP UP TO THE PLATE GOLF CHALLENGE FOR VETERANS PARK IN PENDLETON SC

Pendleton Recreation Association, a 501c3 Non Profit organization, is organizing a Golf Challenge to raise money for our Veterans Park Ball Fields and a Veterans Memorial.  They have contracted with the company, Golf, for Goodness Sake! to run this event.

It is not about the Golf, though.  It is about golfers and "caddies" telling the story of Veterans Park and celebrating at the end of their fundraising endeavor by playing in a fun golf challenge at Boscobel Golf Course.  These hard working volunteers, who believe in the cause of a better facility for the Pendleton Area Children,  will enjoy a day of golf on a beautiful course with great food and prizes.

How do these golfers and non-golfers raise the money?  Each participant will send out 40 letters asking for sponsors in the way of donations.  The average raised per participant is $1,000 from these letters.  Of course, all donations are made to the Pendleton Recreation Association and are tax deductible.

An interested business or individual might also like to sponsor a hole or be another kind of Corporate Sponsor.  For more information, please contact the PRA at 864-646-9226.

Pendleton SC's Old Fashioned Easter Parade and Easter Egg Hunt

The historic Village Green will once again be the site of Pendleton's traditional Easter Egg Hunt but first we will enjoy the Old Fashioned Easter Parade (Denver Christmas Parade Style).  All you do is show up to line up around 1:30 on Queen Street in front of the Anderson Co. School District 4 Office.  Decorate your bicycle, your car, truck, wagon and just planned to stroll along as the parade travels down Queen Street to Exchange Street on the Square and then turns left on Main before breaking up to return to the Village Green for the Egg Hunt.

In the past over 2,000 plastic colored eggs have been hidden on the Village Green and every single egg is found in less than 10 minutes as children run and begin filling their baskets.  It is a site to see if you have never witnessed this.  I heard someone say that it was like a Giant Magnet lowers toward the green and swoops up all 2,000 eggs at once.

But wait!  The event isn't over with the Egg Hunt.  Oh no, not this year.  There will be more to follow such as carnival type games, face painting, and crafts.  There will be a charge for these activities and the proceeds will go toward the ball fields at Veterans Park.  There will also be other goodies sold to eat and drink.  The profits from the Bake Sale will go to the Anderson County Animal Shelter so you see, these are two great causes that we hope you will support.

There will also be some free activities such as Tug Of War, Egg in the Spoon Relay, and other relays.  All these activities are planned and carried out by the Environmental Awareness Club of Pendleton High School.  The Easter Event is sponsored by Friends of the Park this year but it is these fine young folks from PHS who are doing all the work.  We have been so impressed with them and are excited about this event.

So, bring your children and their Easter Baskets and join us in Pendleton for a fun filled day on Sunday, March 28, 2010 from 2 until 5.  Please leave your pets at home.  It is just not safe and some children and adults are very afraid of animals.  Thank you.

Southeastern Literary Tourism Initiative Writes About Pendleton SC

Author Patrick Brian Miller has written a fictional short story about me and Pendleton for the Southeastern Literary Tourism Initiative. He did much research to make our town come to life in this heart warming story that depicts the spirit of our town.

He follows this story with a Tourism Guide showing important local links. I really like the concept of Literary Tourism even though I was not familiar with it until I was contacted by Patrick Brian Miller through another author, Patricia Neely-Dorsey. I had written a lens about Patricia Neely-Dorsey's book of poems Reflections of a Mississippi Magnolia.

I hope you will take the time to read this fictional story and please share it with your friends.

Southeastern Literary Tourism Initiative. The "Ohme" story will be the featured story until Dec 30, 2009 at which time a new story will appear but the Pendleton story will remain in the archives.

I have also written a lens about the Southeastern Literary Tourism Initiative which includes an interview with Patrick Brian Miller.
